What is hardware manicure
Hardware manicure is one of the methods of nail care, which is rapidly gaining popularity, and it is to him that more and more women give preference. He was invented not so long ago in Germany by masters of beauty salons. It is based on a method of caring for nail plates without the use of cutting tools (or with partial use).
Principle of operation
The essence of this method is to remove the cuticle with a milling cutter grinder. Then, with the help of different types of nozzles, the nail plate is carefully polished, and the skin along the contour of the nail is removed. Hardware manicure belongs to the class of gentle nail procedures, which are recommended to be done no more than once every 2 weeks.
It is absolutely forbidden to perform the work on the device on wet skin, since a milling cutter operating at high speed will begin to tear apart the skin steamed in hot water instead of cleansing it.
A master with little experience may not keep track of the force of pressing and, pressing the nozzle too hard, scratches the nail and leaves furrows on the surface. The same problem applies to beginners who decide to purchase a similar device for home nail processing. In both cases, one should be extremely careful and calmly gain experience.
Hardware manicure is a good choice when the cuticle grows too fast or the nail plate is folded in a compartment with irregularities and ridges.
It is also recommended to perform it on extended nails for gentle care.
The effect of such a procedure is hardly noticeable on the neglected state of the nails and is not at all connected with the quality of the nozzles. In such cases, manicure masters apply combined solutions, first treating the nail plates with a machine, and then complete the process with cutting tools.
For owners or future owners of the device, you need to know what the surface of the nail should be during processing.
Carry out a hardware procedure is exclusively on dry nails. Even very well-worn nails after washing hands should no longer be treated with a tool, as they absorb moisture very quickly. When working due to moisture, such nails will begin to heat up, which will cause, at best, unpleasant sensations or damage the nail.
If the device has a system for manually adjusting the number of revolutions, a beginner should not set too much speed, as well as too little. In the first case, you can accidentally damage the nail, in the second – lead to the heating of the plate, even if it is perfectly dry. An acceptable option would be no more than 10000 rpm.
The benefits of hardware manicure
Once you pay a large sum, and having purchased the device, you can forever forget about expensive tools and tools for hand care. Working with nails becomes safe, eliminates the risk of injuries, makes the procedure painless and allows you to simultaneously work with both the cuticle and the nail. Also, with timely sterilization of the nozzles, the chance of infection after treatment is lost.
Hardware manicure (training for beginners helps to learn the basics of safe nail correction) provides the ability to process even very fragile and thin nail plates without risk and takes less time than working with hand tools, helping to quickly change the length and shape of the nail.
All these advantages, despite the presence of a list of some contraindications, allow you to process problem nails with this method.
Disadvantages of hardware manicure
The hardware method has its drawbacks, such as compulsory training, even if a beginner is going to carry out procedures at home. Indeed, for efficient and hassle-free operation, it is required to choose the right nozzle and the speed of its revolutions for processing each individual section.
The lack of professionalism of the master can turn an initially useful procedure into painful horror, especially when it comes to treating nails in a person with a thin nail plate. It is best for such people to turn to masters with extensive experience in this field.
Contraindications to the procedure
It is not permissible to carry out hardware manicure on the nails of a woman suffering from one of the following ailments:
- The cuticles are inflamed and swollen;
- The skin near the nail has damage (scratches, wounds);
- The nail is affected by a fungal infection;
- The cuticle is too thin;
- Microvessels are too close to the cuticle;
- Heavily deformed nail plates should also not be treated with the apparatus.

Preparing for manicure
Hardware manicure begins in another 30 minutes. before starting to work with nails. The client’s hands should be washed well with soap, after which time is waiting for complete drying.
During the training period, beginners need to learn – before starting the procedure, all the elements involved in it must be disinfected. This applies to manicure tools, hardware nozzles, skin and nails on the hands of the client and the master. Antiseptic solutions or regular medical alcohol are well suited for this.
After that, the nails are degreased. If there is an old varnish, it is removed with a special solution (preferably not containing acetone compounds). A softener is applied to the cuticle of the nail, after which it remains to wait for its effect.
Cuticle hardware technique: step-by-step instructions for beginners
When performing a hardware procedure, the following list of rules should first be followed:
- After the softener acts, you should immediately begin to process the skin and cuticles. For this, a diamond nozzle is best suited. The main thing is to listen to the client if he feels discomfort, pain or heating of the nail.
- Once the skin treatment is completed, you should switch to servicing the nail itself to give it the desired shape. To do this, the nozzle is changed to trapezoidal or cylindrical. It is important to ensure that the length of the remaining nail does not turn out less than 2mm.
- The most difficult step for beginners in hardware manicure is polishing. The edge of the polishing nozzle does not hold against the nail plate. The complexity of this work is compensated by speed, since its important part is the rule – the device does not linger at each point for more than one second.
- The final stage of the whole procedure is the application of nourishing oils for perfect care. In addition to its cosmetic and therapeutic purposes, nourishing oil also helps to get rid of particles of the skin and nail.
Mills for hardware manicure: types
The hardware look of manicure is replete with a variety of cutters, which are not limited to the difference in abrasiveness. Not less important parameters are the limitation of working revolutions per minute and differences in the diameter of the tip.
Depending on the purpose, all nozzles are divided into 3 large groups:
- Nozzles for working with the shape of the nail plate and for filing it.
- Nozzles for grinding work with the surface of the nail and its cut.
- Nozzles for the final polishing of the gloss surface.
Also, these groups have their own nozzle units for other features.
What cutters are needed for hardware manicure:
Hardware manicure (training for beginners involves starting the practice with the ceramic type of nozzles) involves removing the old coating, which is ideally suited for the most common nozzle service among salon workers. It is called “corn”, as it has a characteristic appearance.
Its purpose is to qualitatively and painlessly remove gel polish (there is a version of the nozzle for left-handed people).
Also in the list of popular nozzles include “carrot”, which has received recognition for the quality of nail polishing.
The main purpose of ceramic nozzles is to process the nail and the skin around it.
Such nozzles have an inherent rigidity indicator, which is marked with special colors of the rim under the main working surface.
Correspondence of color to a rigidity index of a mill:
- Pink or blue color – a fine-grained mill.
- White – a mill with an average grain size.
- Black is coarse-grained.
The first type from the list is well suited for soft processing of the skin along the contour of the nail plate. The second will serve when removing pterygium and gently removing gel polish. The latter is designed to remove keratinized areas of the skin or calluses. Keep such nozzles carefully so that they are not subject to fatal mechanical stress.
Diamond nozzles are an important tool, divided into many types according to the shape of the product and its abrasiveness. Usually they consist of a steel core on which a diamond coating is applied (natural or artificial).
As in the case of ceramic milling cutters, abrasiveness can be determined by the color of the rim:
- Yellow color is the smallest crumb, not more than 15 microns.
- Red color – small crumbs, from 30 to 50 microns.
- Blue – medium crumb, from 90 to 125 microns.
- Green – a little coarser than average, from 125 to 181 microns.
- Black – large grains, within 300 microns.
- Two black marks – very large grains, in the of 500 microns.
Rare are diamond nozzles with white or 3 black marks, the so-called grinder cutters, which simultaneously serve as a polishing tool. Scarce. Designed to remove heavily keratinized areas of the skin and thick layers of the gel.
A successful outcome when cutting gel polish depends on abrasiveness. Diamond cutters with green or red notches made in Germany are in great demand. It is believed that they are of the highest quality in execution. But there is an analogue made in USA.
Metal milling cutters, unlike the same diamond, have a lower price, although they are used for the same purpose. Usually made from alloys of carbide and tungsten – medical steel. Among the features of steel milling cutters, one can note drawings (notches) on the working surface. They are straight, oblique or spiral.
Such nozzles are well suited for removing keratinized skin, and not with dust, as usual, but with chips. It is noteworthy that among the models of steel mills there is a version made in the “corn” form, which serves to remove the old gel polish.
Silicone nozzles belong to the group of polishing nozzles, suitable both for processing artificial and for working with natural nails. Shining the nail plate can be achieved precisely by using these tips.
They have units for abrasiveness, which is determined by touch: from almost smooth to rough options for grinding. They are made of silicone with interspersed particles of abrasive.
After each use, tools and nozzles should be cleaned. The cutters are washed with water, along with them particles of the skin are removed with a brass brush.
Also a good option is cleaning in an ultrasonic sterilizer. It works on the principle of purification by vibration, which ca
uses fluid to vibrate. Microbubbles formed as a result of such exposure explode, cleaning dirt from hard-to-reach areas of the tool.
Instruments are treated with antiseptic solutions or sterilized in special cabinets, for example, in a dry heat.
All tools made of solid materials are placed in it, after which they are subjected to heat treatment in an environment with a temperature of 180 ? C for 30 minutes, then removed and placed in sterile containers with a sealed lid.
Criteria for choosing devices for manicure
Hardware manicure (training for beginners sometimes takes place on a self-acquired device) is closely related to understanding the criteria for choosing a device.
The first of these is power. For personal use, a too powerful milling cutter is not needed, so you should pay attention to models with a declared power of at least 35, but not more than 50W. However, if every day masters are visited by 5 clients, then it is worth paying attention to models with a capacity of 100 or more watts to reduce the procedure time.
The second is the number of revolutions. Models with indicators up to 20000 rpm. Suitable for home use. If the number of customers is more than 5 people a day, you should choose a machine that runs at 35000 rpm. and more. In cases with professional manicure, the machine should have a speed of 45000 rpm.
The next criterion will be the milling cutters included in the package. It is very good if the device is equipped with a starting list of the main nozzles.
In the best case, it is necessary that among them be:
- For processing rollers and cuticles.
- Nozzles for grinding work.
- Nozzles for polishing the nail plate.
- Nozzles for work with keratinized skin.
Also, the devices differ in the method of clamping the nozzle. There are 3 types in total:
In inexpensive models for home activities, a manual clamp is used to fix the working part of the tool when tightening the washer. A more expensive device will be endowed with a semi-automatic method of fixing the nozzle when tightening the lever. And the most expensive devices come with an automatic clamping system that fixes the nozzle immediately after installation.
Working tools for performing hardware manicure are endowed with a collector or brushless motor. The difference is that the collector motor is designed to operate for several hundred hours, and the brushless motor for several thousand.
A machine with a brushless motor will cost more, but it will be quieter than an analogue with a collector motor, and will be distinguished by its quality and durability. Devices with a collector motor, despite their shortcomings, will quite cope with home manicure.
The last selection criterion is associated with the fine dust released during the operation of the machine. To reduce its number, you can choose a model of the device with a vacuum cleaner built into the countertop, equipped with a sliding tray for quick cleaning of the filter from accumulated saw cut. If the vacuum cleaner is not provided at all, you can purchase it separately complete with a stand, dust collector and filter.
Overview of popular home appliances
Hardware manicure (training for beginners is also accompanied by the choice of the first device) cannot be done qualitatively without a convenient tool. When choosing, take into account in which room it will be produced, how the device will be operated.
Do not spend money on expensive equipment if you have to do a manicure at home on yourself.
