Three Different Stories With Everything In Common

Today I was driving with the local Pop Christian radio station on. I like to be flabbergasted by the latest Contemporary Christian Whiners and the trite (that’s the nice word for it) commentary between songs. Anyway, while I was driving wide eyed with my jaw on the floor of the car…a testimony came on. It was just one of those brief little ditties that are supposed to brighten your moment and cause you to reflect on…something. A young woman proceeded to excitedly tell the story of how her husband had lost his job over the summer and was unable to find another job. So they had decided that she would go back to work as a teacher in the fall, and he would become a stay-at-home dad. She was reveling with enthusiasm at how wonderful the new situation had turned out for them. Turned out he made a great stay-at-home dad…he knew how to keep the house clean and get the kids off to school in the morning…and they were happy that God had made these great new arrangements for their family. Praise God!

A couple of nights ago my husband and I attended a fund raising banquet for our local crisis pregnancy center. One of the counselors told of how a young mid-teen Christian girl and her Christian boyfriend had come for help due to their unplanned pregnancy. The girl stated that she was “100% pro-life”, but when it came to her own personal situation, she felt it would be best to have an abortion. Fortunately, this story had a happy ending, but her thinking is not uncommon among Christians.

The Israelites thought they could worship God…AND a few of the neighbor’s gods as well…”just to cover their bases”. One of the ways they were to show honor to their Creator and point to His Glory among the nations was to walk in His ways. You know…nurture, teach and train their children to walk with God rather than, well… kill them. Embrace the way God made them male and female and their God-chosen roles as a perfect reflection of the future marriage of Christ and His Church rather than reverse the roles and celebrate the reversals. Stuff like that.

By their faith in the Creator God and the resultant obedience that naturally follows such faith, God would then be able to pour out His blessings on them and cause the nations to take notice and glorify the Living God rather than the gods of wood and gold. But the Israelites felt they were “wise” to adopt a few of the neighboring practices…you know…fit in a bit. Not be so odd. I mean, why can’t you worship the True God and some other ones at the same time?? Cover your bases…isn’t that a good idea? That certainly can’t hurt anything and it will surely HELP some of our very tricky, sticky situations (like unplanned pregnancies due to fornication and loss of jobs for family men due to so many sins of our nation I can’t even comment).

Well, let’s see. What happened when they did that? Judgment. Destruction. Because God will be glorified and lifted up as the True God one way…or the other.

I wonder which way God will be glorified in America? I think the writing is already on the wall.
