True Beauty: Video Review and Giveaway

True Beauty

I’m excited to introduce you to a new video series, True Beauty, with Lisa Chan, mother of five and wife to Francis Chan.  The message Lisa shares in this first offering entitled, “Be Still,” is one I am passionate about.  With wisdom and compassion, Lisa gets to the heart of our need as women to be loved, to have purpose and meaning, and to have identity.

I was mesmerized by this video.  I felt like I was sitting in the room with Lisa, and she was talking straight to me.  The music, Lisa’s message, and the testimony of a woman named Susan, who was abandoned by her husband, are expertly woven together to drive this point home to each heart that views it: spending time with Jesus is THE ANSWER for what ails us.  It is the way to peace, hope, and healing.  To be still before God, saturating ourselves in the Truth of His Word, will strengthen our spirit and bring rest to our minds and bodies.  It is the joy of the Lord that is our strength. (Nehemiah 8:10)

Grand Rapids, Mich., June 25, 2012—Every woman knows the feeling. Regardless of her age, her income, or her family situation, women today are facing the challenges of a busy life and the stress that comes with it. Obligations to children, husband, job, church, friends, committees, and the pressures of everyday life have created a spiritual crisis for women. Because in their efforts to be everything to everyone, women have forgotten the ONE who really should be their everything.

Lisa Chan believes that in our quest to do it all, women are missing God. In the first film of her new series, True Beauty: Finding Your Identity in Jesus (David C Cook/Flannel, September 2012), Chan focuses on what it means to Be Still.  Be Still addresses the issues that confront women when they forget to spend time with Jesus—something that, like most women, Chan struggled with herself.

As a mother of five children, co-founder of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California, and wife of best-selling author and pastor Francis Chan, Lisa knows firsthand what it means to be overwhelmed, overcommitted, and out of time.  It was an unplanned, extended time alone with God that fueled her desire to encourage every woman to see the beauty of coming before the Lord in stillness. She has seen firsthand that women in the church are suffering from depression, anxiety, and stress at alarming rates—and recognizes that women need to make the choice to find hope and healing and truth from God’s presence and through His Word.

Be Still, which weaves Lisa’s teaching with the story of Susan, an amazing woman who found that being still with God was what she needed in order to overcome her struggle with a broken marriage, is intended to challenge women who are struggling and help them to find power and strength in just being quiet and listening. With this film, Chan comes alongside women in their walk with the Lord to give them the tools they need to be the person God intends them to be. True Beauty: Be Still is foundational and can be life-changing as women are convicted to take stock of their own reasons for not spending time with Jesus.

Be Still is a personal glimpse into Lisa’s own life, one that any woman will be able to relate to. It is the fact that she is coming from such an identifiable place, provides practical advice, and shares her own challenges with being still that makes this film such a valuable means of communicating to all women.

Lisa Chan is a mother of five and co-founder (with her husband, Francis) of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California. An accomplished singer, Lisa has recorded three albums, including Endless Beauty. Lisa lives with her family in San Francisco where they are doing inner-city ministry as a family.

I loved how Lisa said “It is exciting to spend time with God.” His word changes us-we may not always feel it but we know it is true and we can believe it :)

  2. Janet says:

In the first trailer I love how Lisa reminds us of the gentle and quiet spirit and of distractions, I know for me that is what gets me every time.

  3. Janet says:

I would love to get this for myself, and a few close friends to do together. Thanks!

  6. Tamara Wilkins says:

The first trailer: It caught my attention how she said we need to “get outside of this world” and everything we are surrounded by to figure out what’s true and what’s right.

  7. Tamara Wilkins says:

The second trailer: Had me in tears because I was just having the same conversation with my hubby last night about my world spinning out of control! I can relate to that!

  8. Stephanie says:

Thank you for this giveaway! I think I would use this in a group setting so more women could view it.

  9. Blessings! says:

I like her point that we MUST focus on Christ. So many times we get side tracked with “life” that we forget what we are living for, or rather, who we are living for. It’s not about how many college degrees you have if you can provide for your family then you are doing what you need to do. If you are making the time to be busy in the home to encourage the younger women to love their husbands and their chidlren…then you are achieving so much! It’s crutial that we focus on Christ so we can see what He has in mind for us. He can use us in mighty ways even though we truly are small. He can quiet our hearts and show us where to serve and how to share Him with others in our home countries and all over the world. True peace and acceptance can only come from God and He is there waiting for us to turn to Him and tell Him that we are ready and to please use us. This could be a great tool. I wish you all the best and pray that it truly blesses whomever watches this video. Sincerely, Mommy of two growing blessings & so much more!

  11. Melissa Joy says:

    Hi Natalie,
I am always so blessed by the resources that get filtered through your website, but this one seems to draw me in more than any in a long time. My use of this DVD (or these DVDs) would be twofold: 1) for my own personal growth as a young wife and mother, and 2) I feel called to open up my home for a special time gathering together with other women around God’s word. I deeply desire my gatherings with other women to be rich and deep, and these dvds really appear to have the ability to go there.

  12. Melissa Joy says:

I was captivated by Lisa’s “stillness” in the first trailer. It’s incredible how impactful a gentle and quiet spirit is to an observer–it is evident why this quality is something so praiseworthy in the eyes of God.

  13. Melissa Joy says:

I know some others have commented on what Lisa said about being “excited” to be in God’s Word, so I almost didn’t mention it for sake of not looking like a “follower” haha I’m such a wemmick… :) anyway I did decide to say what came out to me, regardless! I have rarely heard a person describe time in God’s Word as exciting, but that is exactly the way it is to me! That made me all the more thrilled to hopefully see these dvds!

  14. Angie says:

The ladies’ group that I lead has been studying the book of 1st Peter. We are just now at chapter 3. This study would be a great follow-up for us to extend what we have learned about beauty in verses 1-6 of this chapter. It is so relevant and so needed in our culture today! Thanks.

  15. Tehila says:

This would be awesome to watch with my daughters!

  16. Tehila says:

Watched the 1st trailer. Can’t wait to see the while dvd!

  17. Tehila says:

This sounds really good. I think it would be nice to use in a group setting.

  21. Emily says:

I appreciate her first point on “life swallowing me up” she states that “I’ve got this this and this to do”…… and so many demands that were missing God. I can so relate.
