The Perfect Mom – or the Practical Mom?

The Perfect Mom or the Practical Mom? Visionary Womanhood

Not but twelve short years ago I thought I had it all together. I thought I knew all there was to know about raising kids God’s way.

I was home schooling. I had read all the parenting books and highlighted all the important parts. My little kids at the time were obedient (as much as kids can be), well behaved in public, smiled and said “hi” to grown ups. We all dotted our i’s and crossed our t’s to perfection. (OK. That’s maybe a slight exaggeration, but you get my drift.)

I felt certain God was pleased with me and that I could reach out and help all the other mommies with Good Advice from a Successful Mother. (Sheesh.)

And then God sent me a little baby who was different. Very, very different. And then a few more little babies, one right after the other. He threw in a few major trials for good measure, and the scales tipped toward chaos.

I’m still in the thick of figuring out what hit me, but I think my head is beginning to emerge from the rubble. And what I’m seeing is completely different from what I expected. My parenting philosophy has undergone some seismic shifting.  I believe God is the One moving in our family to upset the apple cart, so to speak, in order to do something richer and deeper than what I would have chosen for myself, had I been given a choice. (I’m a foolish little Wemmick.)

I’m encouraged by the things I’ve learned from Sally Clarkson. She’s a seasoned mother who had several children with various out-of-the-ordinary issues. (You can read about that HERE.) Her gentle, love-saturated communication gives me the boost I need to keep going. To keep loving in the face of extreme difficulty. To keep hoping when nothing seems to work. To have courage when I’m fearful of what the future holds.

She made it. By God’s grace – and IN His grace – I can too.

  1. Just as a clarification, what’s included for the My 24 Family Ways are the coloring book pages, not the actual devotional materials.
