Parenting Teens When Something Goes Wrong {Book Giveaway!}
For the month of September, our theme here at Visionary Womanhood is: Preparing Children for Adulthood. There is a lot of fear when it comes to parenting “teens.” Our hope is to shed insight onto this subject using God’s Word as our plumb line rather than cultural advice.
To kick off the month, we’re giving away two helpful books that deal with the subject of parenting teens. Unmask the Predators, a book written by Lisa Cherry and her daughter, Kalyn Cherry Waller, documents their experience with a sexual predator when Kalyn was a teen.
I found chapter 11 “Sexual Abuse 101″ and chapter 12 “26 Keys for Protecting Your Child from Sexual Predators” especially helpful. Though it may not be a subject we have a tendency to gravitate toward (who wants to think this could happen to “me?”), there is much to learn from the wise, practical counsel offered in this book that could possibly avert a future tragedy.
Here are what some Wemmicks you might recognize are saying about this resource:
As a dad and as a husband, I want to do everything I can to protect my family. This book offers great insight to help prevent physical and spiritual attack from outside influences and is an incredible resource to help those already in the battle. It’s message of hope for all parents.
—Michael W. Smith Singer/Songwriter
This is a must read for every parent, pastor, youth minister, and educator. It brings to light a very real issue that every society has to deal with in one way or another and that is the issue of the predator. Whether it emerges in the form of a person, a drug, or a challenging disorder, the predator still comes to steal the hearts of children away from their families. The Cherrys’ painful struggle and ultimate victory provides practical insight and wisdom to help you avoid the battle … and hope for those who find themselves in the midst of it. I highly recommend it.
—Darlene Zschech Singer/Songwriter
A must read for parents who want a glimpse of our declining culture’s intrusion into a Christ-centered family and how God miraculously brought them through it.
—Ron Luce Director, Teen Mania Ministries/Acquire the Fire
While many families sweep issues under a rug, this family chose to sweep their daughter up in a life-changing tidal wave of mercy and grace instead! Through this book, you’ll be challenged and inspired to let God work through you in the lives of your children, no matter what kind of battles they face in life!
—Shannon Ethridge, M.A. Life Coach and Bestselling Author, Every Woman’s Battle series

The second book we’re giving away, Stick: Making the Handoff to the Next Generation, is written by Lisa and her husband, Doug Cherry. This little book packs a powerful punch of encouragement for parents of teens. The first section casts a vision for passing the baton of faith on to our children. The second section introduces the national organization, POTTS, that Doug and Lisa founded.
In their own words:
What is POTTS? Parents of Teens and Tweens is a national organization passionately building the next generation of Christ followers by building the current generation of parents. We support families in their quest to pass the baton of faith to their children by equipping them to assume their God-given leadership roles. Through local church and community groups, online support services, prayer teams, print and video materials, and special events, we empower parents to raise God-fearing children in a Godless culture.
This introduction is followed with information on how to start a POTTS group in your community. There is also a suggested reading list, a discussion guide, and an amazing Family Assessment Tool to help you discover whether or not the things you’ve been wanting to pass on have “stuck.”

Doug and Lisa Cherry’s #1 parenting goal for their 10 home-educated children is this: that each would leave their home equipped to hear the direction of the Lord and have a passion to follow His leadership. After nearly losing the heart of their now grown firstborn daughter to the hands of a sexual predator, they are eager to complete their assignment strong and help other families launch world changers for Jesus even in the midst of a hostile generation. She, together with her daughter, Kalyn, and husband, Doug, has authored Kalyn’s Secret, Unmask the Predators, and STICK: Making the Hand-off to the Next Generation. She writes for moms at Frontlinemoms.com and equips families through Frontline Family Ministries (Frontlinefamilis.org) and Parents of Teens and Tweens(POTTS).
