My Favorite Benefit of Homeschooling: Being Home!

My Favorite Benefit to Homeschooling…………Being Home!
Pretty simple, but after years of public school, traveling a good distance to take our kids to a Christian school, and before and after school activities galore, being home was such a blessing.
I shared previously on Visionary Womanhood that we didn’t homeschool our son until he was in eighth grade so it was a bit of a transition for us but one I look back on with much gratitude that the Lord drew our hearts to bring our son home.
As I’m writing this, I am reminded of all the wonderful reasons we chose to homeschool, but being home was always near and dear to my heart. So my focus today is to share with you the benefits our family experienced in our time together at home.
Benefits of Being Home:
-God’s Word and prayer was the main part of our day at home together.
-More time with our children to be the primary influence in their lives.
-It brought on more family closeness, better communication and unity.
-Flexibility to study our children’s natural talents (music, art etc.) and for school credit too!
-Three meals together every day.
-Family devotions had no time limit.
-Doing chores together throughout the day.
-More time and opportunities to teach important life skills.
-No more late night homework.
-Freedom to travel along with Dad on business trips together.
-Flexible vacation schedules and being able to work them into the current curriculum we were studying.
-Learning to adjust the schedule to interruptions from visitors and ministry needs. It taught our children to be flexible to the Lord’s plan for our day.
-We’re a pretty loving bunch to fit in with – No peer pressure
The one I am most thankful for is the closeness it brought to our family. We love being together, and it has remained a priority in our lives. It is an example I hope our children will carry on in their own families. There is no greater blessing from the Lord after the gift of salvation than the gift of our families.
“In the family, life is brought not only to our doorstep, but into our kitchens, bedrooms, and dens. In the family, life is happening all around us, and it begs to be questioned, evaluated, interpreted, and discussed. There is no more consistent, pregnant, dynamic forum for instruction about life than the family, because that is exactly what God designed the family to be, a learning community.”

This is my first year Home Schooling. My daughter has been to public school for Kindergarten and First Grade, and did pretty great there. For multiple reasons, I have decided to start Home Schooling, which was pretty scarey at first thought. Over the summer though, we have made it our focus, to learn the ins and outs of the homeschooling method, and I am more than excited to get started. Reasons why I am totally thrilled! to Home School:
1. I have 3 girls and 1 boy, that I get hang to out with every day Each of them have such fun, different personalities, and I get to be there for all of it!
2. I get to see what they are learning, and I love the feeling of watching good information go into my kids souls.
3.I don’t have to wake them up early to get to school! (personal yay!)
4. All kinds of new friends! We joined a park group this summer, and feel like I have made more friends, little and tall, this summer, than I have made my entire life. I love them all!
5. Subject Co-op- 4 of us from the park group, are going to be getting together once a week, to teach a different subject. I absolutely love the Mothers, and their children, that I am going to be doing this with. What a great way to make friends, and a great way to make learning Math, Science, Art, and P.E. fun!
6. I feel like I get to start over in my education. Not only do my kids get to learn whatever they want, I do too! I get to be right there with them, learning along also.
7. No more packing school lunches- I get to make sure they are fed the Healthy meals we strive to have each day here at home.
8. I don’t have worry about whether they feel included or not. Our family Motto is “We are Best Friends, and Always will be.”, and that we are
9. I understand each of my children individually. I can let them excel where they want to, and will excel. They will not be held back, because the rest of the class is behind (personal experience with my oldest reader). The each learn differently too.
We have the fun, happy, quick, light learner. (my 7 yr. old) The deep, serious, intuitive, sensitive learner (my 5 yr. old) The logical, do everything right learner (my 3 year old) and my Hands on, try and fail, logical learner (my 10 month old)
10. I am the principle of my little school, and I get to decide when we start the school year (really, we have been going all summer, and I am sure we will continue to every summer), we are not tied down to any curriculum, we get to read as many books as we want (we are doing the classics method), we get to hang out at the library All the time!
I am sure as we continue our journey, I will find more reasons. Even though we haven’t officially started the school year, I feel like I have been doing Home School for 7 years, since my oldest was born. Its all about everyday life, and learning to love it all!
I loved reading through your reasons too! Posts like yours, really keep me going, and help remind me that is going to be a beautiful life, teaching my kids here in my home with me.
Thank you!!

AMEN!!! Beautiful post! I so agree with all the benefits of being home that you wrote. Loved the peer pressure one- that also means no bullying, something I had to deal with quite a bit at “outside” school. Also loved having no more homework- that was a huge plus in my book Another big one is having the opportunity to help teach my sister in her homeschool. I always wanted to be a teacher- so now I am. Also, getting to run errands with my mom- shopping especially. She usually did all of that stuff when we were in school and I had no idea how it was done- comparing prices, making a list and meal plan, coupon clipping and going through the sale paper. Now we do this together and I actually know how to do it. I now love comparing prices, especially the “per ounce” prices- it’s so fun trying to find the best deal!
And just being home and being with my family is and was probably the biggest blessing- it took some getting used to (my whole first year of homeschool) because I was just so used to going out to school instead of just going to the kitchen table. I was also used to having about 25 kids in the classroom with me and a teacher that was not my mom, but after I got adjusted I loved it! I wouldn’t change it for the world and now count it as one of my biggest blessings. It has given me a vision for my future family, Lord willing, and for that I am ever so grateful.
Thank you for sharing these homeschool blessings and for the reminder of what blessings they really are. Love, Libby
It is so true Libby how much goes on in a home when kids are away at school. The importance of knowing how to deal with and take care of the day to day tasks in caring for a home is so important and is something no textbook can teach. What a sweet blessing you are to your Mom and family. Thank you so much for sharing today :). Love you dear friend <3
