The Hollywood Oscars vs. The San Antonio Jubilees

This week our two oldest sons, Sam (18) and Phillip (15) flew down to San Antonio with my parents (their grandparents) to attend the San Antonio Christian Film Maker’s Academy.  This is Sam’s second year of attending and Phillip’s first.  Phillip has a short film that he directed (and they both worked together on) called “The Button” in the semi-finals, and Sam has a commercial that he did for the Home School Legal Defense Association in the semi-finals as well.

Ever since they were little boys they’ve been fascinated with film making.  They made the funniest little movies with their little brother and sister and any willing neighborhood kids using old movie cameras and props around the house.  We thought it was a passing fad.  But the interest grew.  Pretty soon they were listening to all the recorded messages available through Vision Forum that had to do with film making.  They began to develop other skills…and more importantly, strong convictions about making films from a Christian worldview.

My husband and I started to get nervous.  Playing around with film making as a kid was one thing.  But we didn’t want our boys to be “starving artists” their whole lives.  Was this really from God…or was this just a dream of many American kids with stars in their eyes?

I must admit, we’re still a little nervous…but as we see them grow up, we also recognize that just as God has led and guided us along His ultimate plans for our brief life on earth…so God will Sovereignly lead and guide our sons into their life work.  And so we try to encourage them…and get out of the way.

My husband, 12 year old daughter, and 10 year old son flew down on Wednesday to join them for the Festival itself, and I am here at home with our 8, 6, and 4 year old daughters, our 1 year old son, and a baby ripe to be born any day now.  We had planned to all go down as a family for this event until the day last summer when the pregnancy test came out positive.  I will follow the Saturday night festivities live on Twitter.  : )

If you haven’t already read Geoffrey Botkin’s (Faculty for the Christian Filmmakers Academy and Judge for the 2012 SAICFF) insightful article regarding the differences between the Oscar and the Jubilee, I highly encourage you to go HERE and do so now.

Here is a teaser to whet your appetite:

On the weekend of February 25, the battle for the future of of the American culture will be highlighted by two filmmaker award ceremonies going back to back with each other—the Hollywood Oscars and the San Antonio Jubilees. The one represents the dark and evolutionary worldview of Hollywood, replete with its detestation for the biblical family. The other represents the bright hope of the influence of Christianity on families and this nation. And while the heavily entrenched Goliath of Hollywood continues to dominate the horizon of American culture, the sling of an up-and-coming David, proven through record-breaking box office receipts, DVD sales and exciting production values and storylines of a new generation of filmmakers, stands ready to topple the giant.

Things are never what they seem.  And believing…is seeing.
