Having a Baby at Age 43

It was fun to read Doug Phillip’s blog on women in their 40′s having babies. I’m almost 6 weeks away from having Peter…a welcome and already beloved member of our family. I’ll be 44 this year. I’m reprinting the post in it’s entirety here since I can’t find a link JUST to this post. The link will take you to his blog…but he already has other things posted there and it may get hard to find this one. So anyway…here is is:

Is it “Scary” For a Woman to Have a Baby in Her Forties?

CNN seems to think so.

But I am sure glad that my mother was able to go to her 25th college reunion at the age of forty-seven, carrying my brother Samuel. And I am so thankful that while in her mid-forties, the birth mother to my wife decided to carry Beall to term. Thank God for babies born to women in their forties. May God send many, many more. And may our families remain open to the fruit of the womb.

The subject is especially timely because the birth rate for women age 40-44 increased 4 percent in 2008 from 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On the other hand, the birthrate dropped by 3 percent for women under 40 during the same time period.

In fact, “Having Babies In Your Forties” is the subject of one of our special topics this year at The Baby Conference. Hear from physicians, mothers, and families about the blessing of having children in your forties. This topic will address medical issues, challenges, fears, hopes and dreams of having babies in your forties.
