I recently read the most succinct, 25 page booklet on pride and humility. It is called From Pride to Humility by Stuart Scott. Rather than write up my own review, I found this one on Amazon:
I have never written a book review before, but when I saw that Dr. Scott’s booklet was available through Amazon I felt compelled to share how influential this 25 page excerpt from his book, The Exemplary Husband, has been for myself and every person I’ve shared it with. I am a pastor’s wife with two young children; I have found this book has pierced to the heart of my attitudes and actions among my family, friends, fellow church members and the world at large. The book begins essentially with a definition of pride, followed by a list of 30 common manifestations of pride (each followed by a short paragraph of explanation.) These manifestations of pride include: A lack of gratitude, anger, being focused on the lack of your gifts and abilities, perfectionism, seeking independence or control, lacking compassion, being impatient or irritable with others, and/or not having close relationships, etc. Dr. Scott then lays out what would be an appropriate view of self, and defines humility as “the root of every virtue.” There then follows a list of 25 manifestations of humility, concluded by 10 things you can do to help yourself remain humble. It is formatted in a way that is easy-to-read, understand and apply, even for the jr. high/high-school girls in my Sunday School class with whom I studied this booklet as a part of our Bible Study. It is available for around $3.00 through www.gbibooks.org. I highly recommend it, as well as another booklet titled, Communication and Conflict Resolution, which is also excerpted from the excellent work The Exemplary Husband.
