Head on over to one of my favorite blogs, Generation Cedar, for a great article from Kelly on the topic of getting out of debt, saving money and government assistance. The article is a good read, but the comment thread afterward is even more intriguing. Kelly is a brave blogger, tackling all kinds of controversial topics in today’s culture (not so controversial 100 years ago, by the way…the public education system has done a fabulous job of brainwashing us), and hitting the bull’s eye every time. That sort of thing inspires folks to send a lot of mud flinging her way at times, (just the kind of thing that happened to others in history who challenged the status quo) and it’s always interesting to see the responses. She must have a great support system at home! I admire her so much, and encourage you to subscribe to her blog if you haven’t already.
(By the way, just to connect a few dots…Kelly’s daughter, Bria, is a contributor here…and their family recently lost their home in the tornadoes a couple of months ago. Her blog post speaks to the issues they have faced recently over this particular topic.)
Two other things to note:
- I personally know brothers/sisters on government assistance. They don’t want to be in that place, and are praying/striving to get out from under that situation. I am not sending readers over to Kelly’s blog with the intention of “sending a message” to any of those beloved friends. I’m simply desirous of drawing attention to truth. Just because our circumstances are less than ideal does not mean we can’t develop God’s perspective on important issues. God’s ways don’t change though our lives are messed up and we are Wemmicks who mess up…and other Wemmicks also contribute to messing up our lives. We can still stay focused on truth, work toward that truth, and put our hope in a GREAT God who loves us, pours out His grace upon us every morning with faithfulness, and wants to sanctify us and make us like His Son.
- This is the kind of thing I draw to the attention of my teens. They read the post and the comment thread that followed, and we had a VERY stimulating conversation on these issues! It helps them to think critically through things from various angles (all the comments are GREAT for that!) and builds their convictions as well as their ability to articulate their beliefs. I encourage you to “blab” about all these issues with your older children as part of the discipleship process. These kinds of blog posts are EXCELLENT teaching tools. Take advantage!
