A Garden and a Bunny Nest

A beautiful garden full of food for our family.  An adorable nest of baby bunnies.  These two things are not compatible with one another.  How do we know this?  Well…let’s just say that we don’t often get to eat the food our garden produces.  But those cute little bunnies do.

Last year when our bunny loving neighbors were out of town, Phillip shot and killed several rabbits, and we had some respite from a yard totally overrun with rabbits.  This year, Joe put in our garden with high hopes of being able to enjoy the fruits of his meticulous labor for the first time.  So far, so good.  Until yesterday.  One of our kids found the nest.  Aren’t they adorable?  Just as we were discussing the most humane way of putting the furry little cuties to death, the neighbors came over.  End of death talk.  Instead the conversation turned to other, more palatable topics, buying more time for the sweet little bunny rabbits.

Just in case you are a soft-hearted sort, like our sweet neighbors, and the thought of weeding rabbits like weeds is horrifying, please keep in mind that these little lovelies have killed our trees, stripped our garden of vegetables AND flowers (yes…we use fencing…they are too clever for us), and left their droppings all over the yard where the children play.  They multiply exponentially…EXPONENTIALLY…and perhaps if you were living with 683 rabbits in YOUR back yard, you might be grabbing your pellet gun too.  Have mercy on the rabbits?  No…have mercy on US!

For today, anyway, we are enjoying some lettuce from our garden.  This is the very first year.  Since it is Father’s Day, we thought it a proper reward for a very hard working Mr. McGregor…er, Dad.
