Happy Easter Giveaway!

The Story of King Jesus Review - Visionary Womanhood

The David C. Cook publishing company sent me a copy of their new book, The Story of King Jesus by Ben Irwin. It came just in time to read it to the kids (ages 4-11) last night on the eve of Easter Sunday. Perfect! We all enjoyed the unique artwork, gorgeous color combinations, and clear message of God’s loving plan throughout all of history.

This book is the perfect length for a bedtime story, yet it tells the epic story of God’s love for humankind from creation to the present in a simple presentation for children. I loved how it reiterated the key points of the gospel over and over with each historical milestone:

Our Sin

They didn’t listen to God. They wanted to do things their own way. They tried to rule by themselves. God’s good world was broken.

God’s Love

God had a plan. God’s love never stopped. God rescued. God gave.

The book ends by explaining that our world is still broken, but because Jesus came, died, and defeated sin and death, we have the reassurance that one day He will return as our true King and make all things right and good again.

It’s the simple message of hope through Christ for children. When we were done reading, I was able to talk about our own family and our own brokenness. The hope for us is still all wrapped up in Jesus! Because He lives, we can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone.

Here are a few Amazon reviews:

  • This is an amazing children’s book. Not only does it present the whole Gospel, it also presents the whole story of the Bible cover to cover in a way a child can comprehend without isolating “Bible stories” into disparate morality nuggets that read more like fables. Best of all though is that my children LOVE it and have asked us to read it to them every day since it arrived. We’ve been so pleased with this book that we bought several more as Easter gifts for friends and family.
  • The Story of King Jesus is a full-orbed presentation of the story of Scripture. The artwork is fun, engaging, and appropriately dark at times. It is respectful both of the topic and viewer. The emphasized themes are kingship (not surprisingly) from the Bible’s start to finish and how we all like to do things our own way for our own benefit. And rather than make the Bible about “me,” this book includes “me” in the story along with the first people, the people who met Jesus, and the rest of humanity. It a great way to help readers find their place in the story.
  • I read through it this evening and I can already say that I appreciate the choices Irwin made in how he emphasizes our purpose and what it means to be a follower of Jesus…living with Him truly as King, loving others, enemies, and creation. I can see how over time these things will come up in the conversations we have with our kids and I’m excited to have a resource to help get those conversations going. I also really appreciated the “Note To Parents” and the reminder that we really tell this Story best when we are living the Story.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Patty! She is the drawing winner for the free copy of The Story of King Jesus!

  1. I would love to win that book! It sounds like it is right up there with The Big Picture Story Bible and others that have told the gospel without watering it down, but also making it enjoyable and teachable for kids. I love it when new products come out like that!

  3. That sounds like a wonderful book for my children–ages 3-8. Thanks for the review and recommendation.

  4. Thanks so much for doing this giveaway! Sounds like a great book. I’ll definitely put it on our wish list, if not buy it, if I don’t win.

  5. I love this!! How wonderful, I would love to have this to share with my teens (who love when I still read to them) 😉 and the babies I take care of everyday!!

  6. I hadn’t heard of this book yet but it looks really good. I would love another child friendly helper in introducing (or I guess reinforcing) the message of the gospel. Thanks for this opportunity.

  7. Thanks for telling us about the book. I would love to win one, but if not, it will definitely be purchased as a birthday gift for my son. :)

  8. This seems like a book we’d love to have. With eight kids I’m always on the hunt for good material to convey the gospel. This sounds like a great book for the older kids to read to the younger ones and thereby give the older kids a way to easily be a part in sharing faith and discussion with their siblings. :)

  9. That sounds a great book. As my kids are older (11 & 9) it is harder to find Christian books that can be useful for their age.

  10. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I’d love to preview the book for our church.

  11. sounds like a great book that is long overdue. would be super for the kids, grands and church kiddos!!

  14. Oooh looks good! I love gospel-centered books to read to our little girl (soon to be our two little girls :) )! Thanks for the recommendation! I bought one of the What’s in the Bible? DVDs for Easter and my husband and I were very pleased with the information it covered! I found myself saying to him, “This is stuff we learned in seminary!” (Well, the few semesters I took intro classes :) ) I think you were the one that recommended that DVD series one time? If that was you, thanks for that, too. :)

  15. I alwas welcome a chance to share in the story of Jesus! Thanks for the giveaway

  16. I am so excited to learn about this book! We have exhausted the Jesus Storybook Bible and I am always looking for new ways to share the gospel with my son. It sounds wonderful and I would love to win it!

  17. I would love this as a resource to read to my class of 5th grade students. We have a timeline in our classroom of all of history (well, all that is covered in 5th grade!)- from creation to present and this sounds like it would help reinforce the reality of our place in his story.

  18. Thank you for this opportunity to help pass on our faith to our little ones with a quality book!

  19. This seems like a great way to make Easter more personal for the children! Thanks for bringing it to us!

  20. This looks like the perfect book to help our little ones understand God’s love and desire for us in the Easter story – thank you for sharing!
